{"id":825,"date":"2009-08-04T13:18:50","date_gmt":"2009-08-04T13:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/?p=825"},"modified":"2009-08-04T13:18:50","modified_gmt":"2009-08-04T13:18:50","slug":"a-salute-to-flo-skelly","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vukutu.com\/blog\/2009\/08\/a-salute-to-flo-skelly\/","title":{"rendered":"A salute to Flo Skelly"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Watching Season 2 of <em>Mad Men\u00a0<\/em>with its arc of the rise of a female copywriter (Peggy Olsen, played by Elisabeth Moss), I was reminded of that real pioneer woman in advertising, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1998\/04\/30\/business\/florence-skelly-altman-73-market-research-pioneer-dies.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Florence Skelly<\/a>, who died in 1998 aged 73.\u00a0 I never had the good fortune to work with her, but I have worked with lots of people who did.\u00a0 The stories about her were legion.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I recall especially hearing about a series of detailed presentations she gave in the mid-1990s on the attitudes and aspirations of teenagers \u2014 those in what we would now call late GenX and early GenY \u2014 a group she seemed to know better than any other researcher around.\u00a0\u00a0 The irony was that she herself was at the cusp of her eighth decade!<br \/>\nInterestingly, season 1 of <em>Mad Men <\/em>had a couple of scenes involving market researchers, but the one woman was a PhD psychologist with a Central European accent, apparently unable to be creative and clearly\u00a0instantiating a different (albeit then-common) archetype to Flo Skelly.<br \/>\nOn <em>Mad Men<\/em>,\u00a0 a reminder that <a href=\"http:\/\/ta-nehisicoates.theatlantic.com\/archives\/2008\/10\/mad_men_fans_are_effete_elitist_snobs.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ta-Nehisi Coates<\/a>, mashing Karl Rove,\u00a0last October captured the demographic of the typical viewer with great precision:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even if I&#8217;ve never met you, I know you all. You guys are that dude at the country club with the beautiful date, holding a martini and a cigarette, standing against the wall and making snide comments about all the CSI-viewers who pass by. And you&#8217;re also a Muslim.
