Santayana has cleverly kept the first line of the sextet.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When times are hard and old friends fall away<br \/>\nAnd all alone I lose my hope and pluck,<br \/>\nDoubting if God can hear me when I pray,<br \/>\nAnd brood upon myself and curse my luck,<br \/>\nEnvying some stranger for his handsome face,<br \/>\nHis wit, his wealth, his chances, or his friends,<br \/>\nDesiring this man\u2019s brains and that man\u2019s place,<br \/>\nAnd vexed with all I have that makes amends,<br \/>\nYet in these thoughts myself almost despising, &#8211;<br \/>\nBy chance I think of you; and then my mind,<br \/>\nLike music from deep sullen murmurs rising<br \/>\nTo peals and raptures, leaves the earth behind:<br \/>\nFor if you care for me, what need I care<br \/>\nTo own the world or be a millionaire?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And here is Shakespeare&#8217;s #29:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>When, in disgrace with fortune and men&#8217;s eyes,<br \/>\nI all alone beweep my outcast state,<br \/>\nAnd trouble deaf heaven with my bootless cries,<br \/>\nAnd look upon myself, and curse my fate,<br \/>\nWishing me like to one more rich in hope,<br \/>\nFeatur&#8217;d like him, like him with friends possess&#8217;d,<br \/>\nDesiring this man&#8217;s art and that man&#8217;s scope,<br \/>\nWith what I most enjoy contented least;<br \/>\nYet in these thoughts myself almost despising,<br \/>\nHaply I think on thee, and then my state,<br \/>\nLike to the lark at break of day arising<br \/>\nFrom sullen earth, sings hymns at heaven&#8217;s gate;<br \/>\nFor thy sweet love remember&#8217;d such wealth brings<br \/>\nThat then I scorn to change my state with kings.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A sonnet by George Santayana, inspired by Shakespeare&#8217;s Sonnet #29.
