{"id":6128,"date":"2014-01-11T21:16:22","date_gmt":"2014-01-11T21:16:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/?p=6128"},"modified":"2014-01-11T21:16:22","modified_gmt":"2014-01-11T21:16:22","slug":"paging-joe-leeway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vukutu.com\/blog\/2014\/01\/paging-joe-leeway\/","title":{"rendered":"Paging Joe Leeway!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/leeway-joe.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-6138\" src=\"https:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/01\/leeway-joe-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"leeway-joe\" width=\"300\" height=\"231\" \/><\/a>I saw James Ivory&#8217;s film <em>Slaves of New York<\/em> soon after it appeared in 1989.\u00a0 The movie contains a scene set in a nightclub (minutes 63-69) with the most superb trance music, played by a male singer\/guitarist and 3 female supporting musicians:\u00a0 one on percussion, one on synth, and a trumpeter.\u00a0\u00a0 For most of this number, the trumpeter is smoking a cigarette, not playing, until near the end, when she plays while holding her smoking cigarette.\u00a0 The rhythm is a consistent, driving pattern:\u00a0 ta-ta-ta-ta daa daa (eg, 4 quavers followed by two crotchets)\u00a0in each bar, or variants of this, with no changes of harmony, and drone-like chants over the top.\u00a0 The percussion includes a regular high-pitched woodblock (or similar).<br \/>\nOther than two songs by the combo of Arto Lindsay and Peter Scherer, this is the best music in the film (which apart from this music is forgettable).\u00a0 Unfortunately, this track is not on the official soundtrack, and the credits at the end of the film do not identify it clearly.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The song is <em>Mother Dearest<\/em>, and the male singer (and the song&#8217;s composer) is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hypnosis.edu\/hypnotherapists\/joe-leeway\/\" target=\"_blank\">Joe Leeway<\/a>, formerly of British group, The Thompson Twins.\u00a0\u00a0 It is a shame that he has not released any music under his own name, and no longer seems to be working as a muso.
