(See posts among those listed <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/category\/religion\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.)\u00a0 Author Francis Spufford has a nice essay today in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/books\/2012\/aug\/31\/trouble-with-athiests-defence-of-faith\" target=\"_blank\">The Gruaniad<\/a> offering his take on this question, arguing that his religious belief is made up of emotions, and not just some emotions but all.<br \/>\nI was reminded of George Santayana&#8217;s assessment of Roman Catholicism:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Catholicism is the most human of religions, if taken humanly:\u00a0 it is paganism spiritually transformed and made metaphysical.\u00a0 It corresponds most adequately to the various exigencies of moral life, with just the needed dose of wisdom, sublimity, and illusion.\u201d (1944, p. 98)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Reference:<\/em><br \/>\nGeorge Santayana [1944]:\u00a0 <em>Persons and Places<\/em>.
