{"id":2245,"date":"2010-08-15T22:26:09","date_gmt":"2010-08-15T22:26:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/?p=2245"},"modified":"2024-05-28T16:41:38","modified_gmt":"2024-05-28T16:41:38","slug":"recent-listening-4-caravan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vukutu.com\/blog\/2010\/08\/recent-listening-4-caravan\/","title":{"rendered":"Recent listening 4: Caravan"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote?<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Juan-Tizol.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2247\" title=\"Juan Tizol\" src=\"https:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/Juan-Tizol.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"277\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOne of life&#8217;s pleasures is listening to John Schaefer&#8217;s superb radio program on WNYC, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsounds.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Sounds from New York<\/a>.\u00a0 I have just heard his recent program presenting different versions of the jazz standard, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsounds.org\/story\/90400-caravan-variations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caravan<\/a><\/em>. The song is associated with Duke Ellington, although it was composed by trombonist Juan Tizol (pictured playing a valve trombone), and the words were by Irving Mills.\u00a0\u00a0 Some of these versions I knew and like, particularly the ambient versions of trumpeter John Hassell (minutes 7:17 and 43:38 of the album):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Jon Hassell:\u00a0 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=s6QaP_wrTyg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fascinoma<\/a>.<\/em> Water Lily Acoustics, 1999.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The program also included a superb ska version which I did not know before, by the band Hepcat, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-vAJPs-nBYM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hepcat:\u00a0 <em>Out of Nowhere<\/em>. Hellcat, 2004.\u00a0\u00a0 (Reissue of Moon Ska Records, 1983).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One great version not on the program is an arrangement by Gordon Jenkins. This has an agitated string accompaniment, a walking treble sounding like bees circling the soloist, and was included in Season 1 of <em>Mad Men<\/em>.\u00a0 Someone has posted a recording on Youtube <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E5loTx0_KDE\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Mad Men:\u00a0 Music from the Series<\/em>, volume 1. Lionsgate, 2008.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A superb live version I once heard by a violin-and-guitar band in Brisbane I have written about <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2011\/01\/caravan-in-brisbane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<br \/>\n<blockquote?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Two other great ambient albums are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bill Laswell and Remix Productions:\u00a0 <em>Bob Marley Dreams of Freedom. Ambient Translations of Bob Marley in Dub. <\/em>Island Records, 1997.<\/li>\n<li><em>Ethiopiques, Volume 4.\u00a0 Ethio Jazz and Musique Instrumental 1969-1974<\/em>. Buda Musique.\u00a0 This volume comprises performances and arrangements by Ethiopian jazz keyboardist, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mulatu_Astatke\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mulatu Astatke<\/a>, on albums first issued in Ethiopia in 1972 and 1974.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Posts in this series are <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/category\/recent-listening\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Postscript (2024-03-12):<\/strong> An exciting live performance of <em>Caravan<\/em> led by blind pianist Oleg Akkuratov at the 2021 Summer Evenings in Yelabuga Festival in Tatarstan is <a href=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BCJ2SYmo_Mg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.
