{"id":2026,"date":"2010-07-28T22:20:05","date_gmt":"2010-07-28T22:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/?p=2026"},"modified":"2022-09-05T09:39:36","modified_gmt":"2022-09-05T09:39:36","slug":"art-katie-allen-at-mostyn-gallery-llandudno","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vukutu.com\/blog\/2010\/07\/art-katie-allen-at-mostyn-gallery-llandudno\/","title":{"rendered":"Art:  Katie Allen at Mostyn Gallery, Llandudno"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At the fine <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mostyn.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mostyn Gallery<\/a> in Llandudno, Wales, there is currently an exhibition of various contemporary artists, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mostyn.org\/whats_on\/detail\/we_have_the_mirrors_we_have_the_plans\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We Have the Mirrors, We Have the Plans\/Gennym Ni Mae&#8217;r Drychau, Gennym Ni Mae&#8217;r Cynlluniau<\/a>.\u00a0 By far the most interesting works there, and the reason for my visit, are some paintings by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.katieallen.co.uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Katie Allen<\/a>.<br \/>\nAllen paints intricate landscapes with acrylics, making use of the key features of these paints:\u00a0 that they are water-resistant when dry, and dry quickly, so can be over-painted on one another.\u00a0 Her paintings involve intricate borders and highlights, each flower and leaf bordered, with little dots of colour inside every one, an effect which must take hours of tedious, careful, mind-numbing (although also possibly spiritually-uplifting) work to produce.\u00a0\u00a0 A reproduction of her <em>Autumnal Arboretum<\/em> (2009, Acrylic on Board, 153\u00a0x 122 cm) is shown here (courtesy of the artist&#8217;s website), although no reproduction can do justice to the intricacy of the actual painted work:<\/p>\n<p>I find Allen&#8217;s work reminiscent of that of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk\/artists\/peter_doig.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Doig<\/a> in its intricate representation of a landscape; I am reminded of paintings such as Doig&#8217;s <em>White Canoe<\/em> (1991), with its detailed lake-surface reflections of scrub and trees.\u00a0\u00a0 Both are modern-day descendants of the carefully-observed landscapes of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.\u00a0 As with Doig&#8217;s work, I feel Allen&#8217;s efforts and skill are wasted on representational art.\u00a0\u00a0 With such facility, intelligent imagination,\u00a0and obvious energy, she could produce very fine abstractions.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, all art is abstract, even fully representational art, since art is a manifestation of what is in the artist&#8217;s mind, of what the artist sees,\u00a0not what exists in the world outside his or her mind.\u00a0\u00a0 Clearly what is in Allen&#8217;s mind is a distortion &#8211; to me, a very attractive and compelling distortion &#8211; of the real landscapes that the paintings point to.\u00a0 Despite being representational, her work is much closer to the abstract end of the spectrum than to the realistic, pictorial end.\u00a0 By being very nearly, but not actually, abstract, her work unsettles me.\u00a0 In other words, her\u00a0methods and \u00a0technique are highly abstract yet still the paintings point to some real-world landscapes, and these two &#8211;
