{"id":1860,"date":"2010-05-23T17:31:11","date_gmt":"2010-05-23T17:31:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/?p=1860"},"modified":"2010-05-23T17:31:11","modified_gmt":"2010-05-23T17:31:11","slug":"poem-rectius-vives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vukutu.com\/blog\/2010\/05\/poem-rectius-vives\/","title":{"rendered":"Poem: Rectius Vives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has been some time since we had any Horace, so here is Ode X from Book II (translated by David West):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Rectius Vives<\/em><br \/>\nYou will take a better course, Licinius<br \/>\nif you do not always thrust over the deep sea,<br \/>\nor hug the dangerous coast too close,<br \/>\nshivering at the prospect of squalls.<br \/>\nWhoever loves the Golden Mean<br \/>\nis safe (no squalor for him in a filthy garret),<br \/>\nand temperate (for him no mansion<br \/>\nthat men will envy).<br \/>\nThe huge pine is more cruelly tossed<br \/>\nby the winds, the loftiest towers<br \/>\nhave the heaviest fall and lightning strikes<br \/>\nthe tops of mountains.<br \/>\nThe heart well prepared hopes in adversity<br \/>\nfor a change in fortune, and fears it in prosperity.<br \/>\nJupiter brings back ugly winters<br \/>\nand Jupiter<br \/>\nremoves them. If all goes badly now, some day<br \/>\nit will not be so. Sometimes Apollo rouses<br \/>\nthe silent Muse with his lyre.
