{"id":1527,"date":"2009-12-20T19:16:32","date_gmt":"2009-12-20T19:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/?p=1527"},"modified":"2019-03-16T14:19:10","modified_gmt":"2019-03-16T14:19:10","slug":"political-activists-of-renown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/vukutu.com\/blog\/2009\/12\/political-activists-of-renown\/","title":{"rendered":"Political activists of renown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I have listed the <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2009\/09\/thinkers-of-renown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">teachers and writers who have influenced me<\/a>, along with the <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2009\/11\/managers-of-renown\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">managers whom I admire<\/a>.\u00a0 I now list the politicians and political activists whom I\u00a0admire.\u00a0 Some of these led conventional political careers, others were\u00a0community organizers or single-issue advocates, and yet others were spies, or were accused of being such.<\/p>\n<p>Edmund Campion, Robert Persons, Robert Southwell, Thomas Aikenhead, Tom Paine, Abe Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Solomon Plaatje, Franklin Roosevelt, Ted Theodore, John Curtin, Doc Evatt, Richard Sorge, Imre Nagy, Zhou Enlai, Milada Horakova, Bram Fischer, Salvador Allende Gossens, Lyndon Johnson, Donal Lamont, Rudolf Margolius, Gough Whitlam, Helen Suzman, Andrei Sakharov, Alexander Dubcek, Nelson Mandela, Zhao Ziyang, Martin Luther King Jr, <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2009\/03\/a-salute-to-zdenek-mlynar\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zdenek Mlynar<\/a>, Mikhail Gorbachev, <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2011\/12\/havel-na-hrad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vaclav Havel<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2016\/01\/arm-members\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Schneider<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2015\/12\/a-salute-to-bella-subbotovskaya\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bella Subbotovskaya<\/a>, Paul Keating, <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2010\/08\/five-minutes-of-freedom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vadim Delone<\/a>, Jes Albert M\u00f6ller, Barack Obama and <a href=\"http:\/\/meeseeks:5080\/blog\/2010\/05\/old-etonians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rory Stewart<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Australia (5), Czechoslovakia (5), and South Africa (5) have produced more than their per capita share of political heroes, it would seem, but the distribution no doubt reflects my reading and interests.\u00a0 Of course, it hardly needs to be said that I do not necessarily agree with any or all the views these people have expressed or hold, nor necessarily support all their actions.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, I have listed the teachers and writers who have influenced me, along with the managers whom I admire.\u00a0 I now list the politicians and political activists whom I\u00a0admire.\u00a0 Some of these led conventional political careers, others were\u00a0community organizers or single-issue advocates, and yet others were spies, or were accused of being such.
